Bar Renovation – From Bad to Better

Bar Renovation – From Bad to Better

“Addition by Subtraction” was the theme for the renovation of my bar. Considerate detailing that thought about the entire space resulted in a simple and modern solution.

Fireplace Renovation – The Long Haul

Fireplace Renovation – The Long Haul

Renovating my house has not been awesome for so many reasons, but slowly and surely we are getting someplace with it all. The most recent item to be added to the “mostly” completed list is my fireplace. Let’s make this clear right from the beginning – I despise my fireplace in the way that Harry Potter despises Voldemort … it is absolute and with malice.

Surprise! I’m Starting a Residential Studio

Surprise! I’m Starting a Residential Studio

I really enjoyed the 20+ years I spent working with people (who typically became my friends) to design their dream houses. Of all the things that changed when I left my last firm and slid on over to BOKA Powell, the only thing I’ve really missed was working on residential projects. You might not know this about me but I generally like people and the best part of doing residential work is the time spent going through the process with the people who have hired me to go on this journey with them. A couple of weeks ago, after thinking about it for slightly longer, I decided to approach a few key individuals in my office and introduce the idea of allowing me to take on residential projects … which is kind of a big deal for a firm of 120 people that focuses on commercial work.

With almost no discussion, the response when I brought it up to my inner circle was an instant “Yes”, almost it as if it was ridiculous that I would need to ask the question.

Going Dark on my Fence and Deck

Going Dark on my Fence and Deck

Should you paint your fence black? I came pretty close and settled in on a charcoal color (which was a nice change from the previous color of “raw hot dog”) and I’m here to tell you that going dark can be a very good thing.

Being an Architect Is Hell – Painting and Contact Paper

Being an Architect Is Hell – Painting and Contact Paper

Renovating your home is fun … as long as you have an unlimited budget and don’t have to live there during the process. Unfortunately for me, I don’t have either of those two things and the last two weeks have been pretty rough … not in a “working-in-a-traveling-carnival” sort of way, but I would imagine that both equally unpleasant and would cause you to re-evaluate your life decisions several times a day.

Being an Architect is Hell – The Renovation Part 1

Being an Architect is Hell – The Renovation Part 1

Being an Architect is hell … I’ve said it before and a lot of you have agreed with me (the smart ones typically). While I think it’s one of the best jobs you can have, being an architect can complicate other aspects of your life, aspects that “regular” people can blissfully go about their lives completely, and at times, blissfully unaware. I am in full-blown renovation at my house at the moment, and I am either a genius or a complete lunatic for choosing this time to tackle the work.
